Question:

What do football fans do on Super Bowl Sunday while they wait for the game to start?

  • How do you spend the endless hours of waiting for the kick off?
  • How do you prepare for the excessive consumption of traditional beverages, nachos, chili, hotdogs, and wings?
  • What do you do to compensate for the hours of sitting in front of the television watching fellow humans run up and down a field crashing into each other?

The mission of IRIS—Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services—is to help refugees and other displaced people establish new lives, regain hope, and contribute to the vitality of Connecticut’s communities.  Refugees have left their country of origin because of persecution based on their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.  Each year IRIS welcomes and resettles approximately 150 refugees in the New Haven area.  Currently, over half come from Iraq, and others come from Afghanistan, Congo, Cuba, Ethiopia, Iran, Somalia, Sudan, and other countries.

IRIS helps refugees with housing, food and other basic needs; education; legal assistance; cultural understanding; preparing for work and searching for employment; English class; childcare; and healthcare appointments and orientation.
